Night sky experiment

Photo taken on a hiking holiday, around Easter, in Belgium. Hiking, so no tripod, but I managed to get my camera in a stable position. My Olympus C740UZ has a max. shutter time of 16 seconds, so when I first looked at the photo it was not so impressive. When I added the same photo 5 times to itself (apparent shutter time of 80 seconds) the shades of the trees started to appear, and faint stars became visible. You can see the upper part of Orion and Saturn against the western sky on this picture.
Is this experiment worth continuing, or can this just not be done with a digicam?
